THE SUN WILL COME OUT THIS HOLIDAY SEASON AT ARIZONA BROADWAY THEATRE
November 30 – December 30, 2012
(Peoria, AZ. November 6, 2012)
Annie, one of the best-loved family musicals of all time, takes center stage at Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT) from Friday, November 30, through Sunday, December 30, 2012.
“The holidays are all about quality time with family, and Annie is a wonderful opportunity for all generations to enjoy the arts, and theatre, together,” said ABT’s Executive Producer, Kiel Klaphake. “There’s nothing that gives us as much joy as seeing the smiling faces of young theatre-goers experiencing the magic and wonder of theatre for the first time. Annie is sure to inspire and ignite a passion in more than one young actor, dancer or singer who attends!”
Inspired by the famous comic strip Little Orphan Annie, which first ran in the New York News in 1924, Anniemade its Broadway debut in April 1977 and played 2,377 performances before closing in 1983. The show won seven Tony Awards, including: Best Musical, Best Book, Best Original Score and Best Choreography. This heart-warming musical is the rags-to-riches story of plucky young Annie's journey from the hard-knock New York orphanage to the luxurious home of billionaire businessman Oliver Warbucks. Boasting one of Broadway's most memorable scores, including "It's the Hard Knock Life," "Easy Street" and the legendary "Tomorrow," fantastic choreography, a laugh-out-loud script and, of course, Annie’s best friend, the adorable dog Sandy, it’s no surprise that Anniehas become one of the best-loved family musicals of all time.
Annie will star two talented young ladies: 11-year-old Morgan Goldberg and 14-year old Gabriela Vatistas. Morgan and Gabriela were selected from more than 40 talented girls who auditioned for the role of Annie. Morgan has participated in ABT’s Academy for Young Performers program; most recently playing the role of Cruella de Vil in last summer’s 101 Dalmatians Jr. Gabriela is no stranger to the role having played Annie in Scottsdale Dessert Stage’s 2011 production. Valley favorite and veteran actress Johanna Carlisle will play the role of Miss Hannigan. The cast will also feature David Simmons as Daddy Warbucks.

Arizona Broadway Theatre Presents
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s American Classic
October 19 – November 18, 2012
(Peoria, AZ. September 10, 2012)
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s American classic was more than a hit – it was the first real phenomenon in the modern Broadway era. Oklahoma! is the story of Laurey and the two rivals for her affections: Curly, a cowboy; and Jud, the hired farmhand. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Oklahoma! also tackles class issues between the farmers and the cattlemen in the rugged landscape of a state in its infancy. This brilliant first collaboration of Rodgers and Hammerstein set box office records as it ushered in the Golden Age of American Musical Theatre.
ABT’s own Executive Producer, Kiel Klaphake, takes the director’s chair for this beloved musical, adding another favorite show to his list of directorships at ABT, including Cabaret, Gypsy, The Full Monty, and Sunset Boulevard. Klaphake is excited to bring this classic to the ABT stage, and said, “This show ushered in the modern musical theatre where musical expressions were rooted directly in the story. Previously, musical theatre had great songwriters and ‘ok’ scripts. R&H were the first to have a true collaboration.” Oklahoma was truly the first of its kind, and the Broadway world was forever changed by its fresh approach to the theatre. Klaphake said, “ Their process began with Hammerstein writing lyrics and Rogers adding music. A real departure from the past when the songwriters had great melodies, that someone else, sometimes years later, put words to them.”
Acting as leading lady “Laurey” is ABT alumni Jennifer Bell, having played such memorable roles as Maggie in A Chorus Line and Kathy in Singin’ in the Rain. Bell, a graduate of Florida State University’s Music Theatre program, is a New York resident with other notable roles to her credit, including the Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Ermengarde in Hello, Dolly!
Peter Carrier takes the stage as the lovable cowboy, Curly, returning to the ABT stage from his current home in New York City. A graduate of Ithaca College’s Musical Theatre BFA program and a member of Actor’s Equity, Carrier can be remembered from his portrayal of Joe Gillis in ABT’s Season 7’s Sunset Boulevard, and other past credits include Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls, Tommy in Brigadoon, and Joe Hardy in Damn Yankees.
