Arizona Broadway Theatre Presents Disaster! The Musical – A Hilarious Journey Through the 70s

[Peoria, AZ, July 26, 2023] – Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT) is thrilled to announce its latest production, Disaster! The Musical, a side-splitting comedy that will take audiences on a groovy journey back to the 1970s. Running from August 18 to September 15, this sensational musical promises an evening of laughter and music.

Disaster! The Musical was written by Seth Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick, with additional material by Drew Geraci. The show premiered off-Broadway in 2012 and features a book and score filled with hilarious references. Disaster! The Musical is a rollicking tribute to the disaster movies of the 1970s —Jaws, The Towering Inferno, Earthquake — packed with outrageous characters, calamitous situations, and unforgettable hits from that iconic era. Set on a floating casino and discotheque, the show’s plot revolves around a group of eccentric and star-crossed characters whose fates become intertwined amidst a series of hilarious and, well, disastrous events.

Disaster! The Musical capitalizes on the dire tropes of these movies in an extremely smart and campy way, supported by songs that we all know and love. It is a boy–meets–girl, boy–saves–girl–from–impending–doom story that has earthquakes, tidal waves, fiery explosions, man-eating piranhas, sharks, and killer rats. Everything that can go wrong, will go wrong, “ says production director, Danny Gorman. “The real challenge which is also one of the most exciting things about directing is figuring out how to go through all of that on stage eight times a week.”

The production is unique in its requirement of a variety of eclectic elements, from executing a sinking ship, to tidal waves and explosions, all while the performers are disco-dancing, panicking, and transporting the audience back to one of America’s most iconic decades. With stunning sets, dazzling costumes, and toe-tapping tunes, Disaster! The Musical guarantees a night of entertainment that will have patrons dancing in their seats.

Disaster! The Musical is highly-anticipated as the final production in ABT’s 22 | 23 Season, before the new season begins with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, opening Friday, September 29, 2023.
