November 4 - November 14
Get ready for a brilliant comedic musical satire!
Set in the not-so-distant future, Urinetown takes the Mainstage this November! In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage caused by a 20-year drought has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. Amid the people, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America’s greatest art forms. Don’t miss this hilariously funny, fast-paced, and touchingly honest musical at Arizona Broadway Theatre with a young adult cast.
Arizoan Broadway Theatre provides opportunities to local talent including teens to perform in the Mainstage Theatre with the direction from performing arts professionals.

with Renee Koher (Director) &
Stephen Hohendorf (Choreographer)
What is Urinetown about?
Stephen: “Urinetown is a political satire told through musical theatre parody. It often references iconic musical theatre moments such as A Chorus Line, Les Mis, and even Fiddler on the Roof. It’s a show with deep, deep heart. If you think the title is funny, wait until you see the show! With the state of the world right now, sometimes pure, unadulterated, laughter is exactly what we need.”
Why should audiences come to see this production?
Renee: “Urinetown is a brilliant piece of theatre. It is everything you want a musical to be: fun, funny, and thought-provoking. It has fantastic music, loveable characters, exciting choreography, and is just an exceptional show and a good time. It is by far one of my favorites!”
You’ve both performed in many productions on the ABT stage. When did you start Directing/ Choreographing and how was that transition for you?
Renee: “It has been a pretty natural transition from performing. It is so fun and interesting to be on this side of the table. I have been teaching voice and acting for around 20 years so I feel very comfortable in this world, and I love working with actors and breaking down characters and scenes. It is one of my passions, outside of performing.”
Stephen: “ I started choreographing back in 2016. The transition has been a fun one. It’s always so exciting to see what I have conceived in my head played out in front of me. It’s a really fun way to exercise my creativity.”
What is your favorite moment in the show?
Stephen: “My favorite moment in the show is “Snuff That Girl” because it’s such a fun moment to showcase some of our amazing dancers and performers.”
Renee: “ I have so many, but I love the opening and how it sets up the entire premise and feel of the show. I also love the “AH HA” moment when you realize the meaning behind Urinetown. This is truly one of my favorite shows, there are no dull moments, it is a perfectly written show, and will give you an evening of laughter and enjoyment that we all want and need right now.”
